Cell Phones in College

While riding back on the bus from Rutgers Stadium to the parking lot after the Rutgers Football game I noticed two students texting away on their phones. I asked them if their professors make use of their cell phones in their classes. They said none of them use the cell phone as a direct teaching and learning tool, but they can use their phones to access the internet (one student had an iPhone 3G and the other student had a Blackberry). Once on the internet the students can access the professors Podcasts and Lecture notes through the college's Course Management Software. Rutgers uses the program Sakai as the portal that allows professors and students to connect online. The two students told me everything is online. According to them none of their professors hand out any paper.

I asked the two students if any of their professors use the clickers to get live feedback during a lecture. One of the students said two of her professors used the clickers and that she had to buy the device. I told them about Poll Everywhere and how their professors could use that with their cell phones to accomplish the same thing as the clickers.

What a great solution Poll Everywhere would be for college campuses. Any College IT staff out there listening?
